1. Notify Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC)
As soon as your child is born, inform IRCC about the change in your family composition. If your application is still in process, failure to report a newborn could affect your Permanent Residence (PR) application.
2. Gather Required Documents
Prepare the following documents to submit to IRCC:
- A copy of the child’s birth certificate
- A copy of the child’s passport (if applicable)
- Updated family information form (IMM 5406 – Additional Family Information)
- Updated application form (IMM 0008 – Generic Application for Canada)
- Processing fee (if required, based on the program)
3. Submit the Documents to IRCC
- If your PR application is still being processed, upload the documents through your online IRCC account or send them via email or mail, depending on your case.
- If your PR has already been approved but not yet granted, contact IRCC immediately to request an update.
4. Pay Any Additional Fees
Some PR streams may require an additional processing fee for adding a dependent. Check the latest fee structure on the IRCC website.
5. Wait for IRCC Processing
IRCC will process the updated information and may request additional documents or medical exams for the newborn if applicable. Processing times may vary based on the program and application stage.
6. Receive Confirmation and Update Your Application
Once approved, your child will be officially added to your PR application. If you receive your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR), ensure your child’s name is correctly included before landing in Canada.
