A Temporary Resident Visa (TRV), also known as a visitor visa, is required for foreign nationals who wish to enter Canada temporarily for tourism, business, or to visit family and friends. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to apply.
1. Determine If You Need a TRV
You need a TRV if you are from a country that is not visa-exempt (check Canada’s official visa requirements) and you plan to stay in Canada for six months or less for tourism, business, or family visits. Note: If you are from a visa-exempt country, you may need an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) instead.
2. Gather Required Documents
Prepare the following:
✅ Valid Passport (with at least six months of validity)
✅ Completed Application Form (IMM 5257)
✅ Proof of Financial Support (bank statements, employment letter, or sponsorship letter)
✅ Travel Itinerary (flight bookings, hotel reservations)
✅ Letter of Invitation (if visiting family or friends in Canada)
✅ Proof of Ties to Your Home Country (job letter, property ownership, or family commitments)
✅ Passport-Sized Photos (as per IRCC specifications)
✅ Biometrics Receipt (if required)
Additional Documents: Business visitors may need a letter from their employer. If applying for a Super Visa, proof of medical insurance is required.
3. Apply Online or On Paper
You can apply online via the IRCC website (recommended for faster processing) or on paper at a Visa Application Centre (VAC) in your country.
Steps for Online Application:
- Create an IRCC account and sign in.
- Complete the application form (IMM 5257) and upload supporting documents.
- Pay the application fee (CAD $100 for a single entry).
- Schedule a biometrics appointment (if required).
- Submit your application and wait for processing.
4. Attend Biometrics Appointment (If Required)
If required, visit a Visa Application Centre (VAC) to provide fingerprints and a photo. A biometrics fee of CAD $85 applies.
5. Wait for Processing & Decision
TRV processing times vary by country but usually take a few weeks. You may be asked to attend an interview or provide additional documents. If approved, you’ll receive a passport request to get the visa stamped.
6. Receive Your TRV and Travel to Canada
Once your TRV is issued, check the visa validity and entry conditions. At the Canadian border, a CBSA officer will review your documents before allowing entry.
