An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada, except for those who do not comply with Canadian labor laws. Unlike employer-specific permits, you don’t need a job offer before applying.
1. Who Can Apply for an Open Work Permit?
You may be eligible if you fall into one of these categories:
- International graduates eligible for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
- Spouses or common-law partners of temporary foreign workers or international students.
- Bridging Open Work Permit (BOWP) applicants, waiting for permanent residency approval.
- Asylum seekers, refugees, or vulnerable workers.
- Certain temporary residents under special programs.
2. Documents Required
- Valid passport (with at least six months of validity).
- Proof of eligibility (e.g., study permit, spousal relationship, or PR application status).
- Recent passport-sized photos (meeting IRCC specifications).
- Proof of financial support (bank statements, sponsorship letter, etc.).
- Medical exam results (if required).
- Application forms (e.g., IMM 5710 for applicants inside Canada).
3. Application Process
Step 1: Determine Eligibility
Visit the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website to check your eligibility.
Step 2: Gather Your Documents
Ensure you have all required documents in digital format if applying online.
Step 3: Submit Your Application
- Online: Create an account on the IRCC website, complete the application, and upload your documents.
- Paper-based (if applicable): Mail your application to the designated IRCC office.
Step 4: Pay the Fees
- Open work permit fee: $100 CAD.
- Work permit processing fee: $155 CAD.
Step 5: Biometrics & Medical Exam
- If required, visit an authorized center for fingerprinting and a medical exam.
Step 6: Wait for Processing
Processing times vary by country, but it can take weeks to months.
4. What Happens After Approval?
- If applying from outside Canada, you’ll receive a port of entry letter to show upon arrival.
- If applying within Canada, your work permit will be mailed to you.
