The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score determines your ranking in the Express Entry pool. A higher CRS score increases your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency. Here’s how you can maximize your score.
1. Improve Your Language Test Scores
Take the IELTS (English) or TEF (French) test and aim for CLB 9 or higher. Retake the test if needed to boost your Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening scores. Learning both English and French can add up to 50 extra CRS points.
2. Boost Your Educational Credentials
If you have only a bachelor’s degree, consider getting a master’s degree or postgraduate diploma for more points. Get an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) for foreign degrees to ensure they match Canadian standards. Completing two or more educational qualifications can increase your CRS score significantly.
3. Gain More Work Experience
If you have less than 3 years of skilled work experience, continue working to gain more points. Canadian work experience carries more weight than foreign experience—consider working in Canada through a work permit or employer sponsorship.
4. Secure a Job Offer from a Canadian Employer
A valid job offer in a skilled occupation (NOC 0, A, or B) can add 50 to 200 points. The job must be full-time, continuous, and supported by a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA).
5. Apply for a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
Receiving a PNP nomination automatically gives you 600 additional CRS points. Research and apply to PNP streams that align with your skills and work experience.
6. Increase Your Spouse’s CRS Score (If Applicable)
If you are married or in a common-law relationship, your spouse’s language test scores and educational qualifications can contribute additional points. Choose the primary applicant wisely—if your spouse has a higher CRS potential, consider switching the main applicant.
7. Maximize Age-Related Points
The best age range for CRS points is 20-29 years (earning the maximum of 110 points). If you are close to turning 30, apply as early as possible before points start decreasing.
8. Get Extra Points for Siblings in Canada
If you or your spouse have a brother or sister who is a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, you can earn 15 extra points.
9. Keep Your Express Entry Profile Up to Date
If you complete a new degree, gain work experience, or improve language scores, update your profile to reflect the higher CRS score.
10. Stay Updated on CRS Cut-Off Scores
Check the latest Express Entry draws to see the minimum CRS scores required. If your score is slightly below the cut-off, consider applying for PNP or retaking the language test to improve your ranking.
