The Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) allows international students who have completed an eligible program in Canada to work and gain valuable experience. This permit is open work, meaning you can work for any employer, anywhere in Canada.
1. PGWP Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for a PGWP, you must meet the following criteria:
- Completed a full-time program at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI)
- Program length must be at least 8 months
- Applied within 180 days of receiving final marks
- Held a valid study permit at some point during your studies
Who is NOT Eligible for a PGWP?
- If you studied part-time (except for the final semester)
- If you took English or French as a Second Language (ESL/FSL) courses
- If you completed your program via distance learning from outside Canada
- If you already received a PGWP before
2. PGWP Validity Based on Study Duration
- Program 8 months – 2 years: PGWP will be valid for the same duration as your program.
- Program 2 years or more: PGWP may be valid for up to 3 years.
- Multiple programs: If you completed two eligible programs, you may qualify for a longer PGWP.
3. How to Apply for a PGWP
A. Gather Required Documents
- Final transcript or official letter confirming program completion
- Valid passport (valid for at least the duration of your PGWP)
- Study permit (must have been valid at some point during studies)
- Proof of graduation (diploma, certificate, or official completion letter)
B. Submit an Online Application
- Create an IRCC account on the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) website.
- Complete the application form (IMM 5710).
- Upload required documents and pay the fees:
- PGWP application fee: CAD $255
- Biometrics fee: CAD $85 (if required)
- Submit your application and wait for approval.
C. Apply From Inside or Outside Canada
- If you’re inside Canada, you can continue working while waiting for your PGWP decision if you applied before your study permit expired.
- If you left Canada, you can apply from abroad, but you must re-enter with a valid work permit once approved.
4. PGWP Processing Time
- Online applications: 3 to 6 months
- Paper applications: Longer than online applications
5. What to Do After Getting Your PGWP?
- Apply for a Social Insurance Number (SIN) to start working
- Find a full-time or part-time job in Canada
- Gain at least 1 year of skilled work experience to qualify for permanent residency (PR) through Express Entry or Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
