A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a 9-digit number issued by the Government of Canada. It is required for employment, accessing government benefits, and filing taxes. If you are a newcomer, getting your SIN should be one of your first steps after arriving in Canada.
1. Determine Your Eligibility
You can apply for a SIN if you are:
- A Canadian citizen
- A permanent resident (PR)
- A temporary resident with a valid work or study permit
2. Gather Required Documents
You need original documents (no photocopies or digital copies) to apply. Depending on your status, you will need:
- Permanent Residents: PR card or Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR)
- Temporary Residents: Work permit or study permit (if allowed to work)
- Canadian Citizens: Birth certificate or Canadian citizenship certificate
If your documents are in a language other than English or French, you may need a certified translation.
3. Choose Your Application Method
You can apply for a SIN in three ways:
- In Person: Visit a Service Canada Centre with your original documents. You will receive your SIN immediately.
- Online: Apply through the Service Canada website by uploading digital copies of your documents. Processing takes about 10 business days.
- By Mail: Send a completed SIN application form along with original documents to Service Canada. Processing can take 20 business days.
4. Receive Your SIN
Your SIN is confidential and should be stored securely. You won’t receive a physical SIN card, only a letter with your number.
5. Protect Your SIN
- Only share your SIN when required, such as with employers, banks, or government agencies.
- Avoid carrying your SIN letter in your wallet.
- Monitor for fraud by checking your credit report regularly.
