To qualify for Canadian citizenship in 2025, you must meet the following requirements set by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC):
1. Permanent Resident (PR) Status
- You must have valid permanent resident status.
- You cannot be under a removal order, have unresolved immigration issues, or be under investigation for fraud.
2. Physical Presence in Canada
- You must have lived in Canada for at least 1,095 days (3 years) within the last 5 years before applying.
- Time spent in Canada as a temporary resident (student, worker, refugee) or a protected person may count as half-days (up to 365 days).
3. Income Tax Filing
- You must have filed taxes for at least 3 years within the last 5 years (if required under Canada’s Income Tax Act).
4. Language Requirement (For Ages 18-54)
- You must demonstrate proficiency in English or French at CLB Level 4 or higher (Canadian Language Benchmark).
- Proof can include:
- CELPIP or IELTS test results
- School transcripts from English/French education
- Government-approved language training programs
5. Pass the Citizenship Test (For Ages 18-54)
- A 30-minute test with 20 multiple-choice questions on Canadian history, values, rights, laws, and government.
- Passing score: 15/20 (75%)
- Test can be taken online or in-person.
6. Oath of Citizenship
- If approved, you must attend a citizenship ceremony and take the Oath of Citizenship.
- The ceremony may be virtual or in person.
Who Cannot Apply?
You may be ineligible if:
- You have a criminal record (inside or outside Canada).
- You are on probation, parole, or serving a sentence.
- You have been ordered to leave Canada.
