The Express Entry profile is the first step toward immigrating to Canada as a skilled worker. A strong profile increases your Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, boosting your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residence. Follow these steps to create a competitive profile.
Step 1: Check Your Eligibility
Before creating a profile, determine if you qualify under one of the three Express Entry programs:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP)
- Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP)
- Canadian Experience Class (CEC)
Use the IRCC’s eligibility tool to check your qualifications.
Step 2: Gather Essential Documents
- To complete your profile, you need:
- Language Test Results – IELTS, CELPIP, TEF, or TCF (must be valid for two years)
- Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) – Required if your education was obtained outside Canada
- Passport or Travel Document
- Work Experience Details – Job title, duties, company details, and reference letters
- Proof of Funds – Bank statements (if applicable)
Step 3: Create an Express Entry Profile
- Visit the IRCC website and sign in or create a GCKey account.
- Complete the online form with personal details, work experience, education, language test scores, and other factors.
- Submit your profile – If eligible, you’ll enter the Express Entry pool.
Step 4: Receive Your CRS Score & Improve It
- The Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) assigns points based on:
- Age (Max points for 20-35 years old)
- Education level
- Work experience
- Language proficiency (English/French)
- Canadian job offer (if applicable)
- Provincial Nomination (adds 600 CRS points)
How to Boost Your CRS Score:
- Retake your language test for higher scores
- Gain more work experience
- Get a job offer from a Canadian employer
- Apply for a Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
Step 5: Wait for Express Entry Draws & Receive an ITA
The Canadian government holds Express Entry draws every two weeks. If your CRS score is above the cut-off, you’ll receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA). You must submit your permanent residence application within 60 days.
Step 6: Submit Your Permanent Residence Application
Upload supporting documents, including:
- Medical exam results
- Police clearance certificate
- Proof of funds (if required)
Pay the application fee and submit your application.
Step 7: Receive Confirmation & Move to Canada
If approved, you’ll receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR). Prepare for your move and settle in Canada as a permanent resident!
Pro Tip: Regularly update your Express Entry profile if you gain more experience, education, or language test results to improve your CRS score.
