What Happens After Receiving An Invitation To Apply (ITA)?

Once you receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) through Express Entry, you have 60 days to submit your complete application for permanent residence. Here’s what happens next:

1. Accept or Decline the ITA

Log into your IRCC account and choose to accept or decline the ITA. If you decline, your profile remains in the Express Entry pool for future draws. If you accept, you must submit all required documents within 60 days.

2. Gather and Submit Required Documents

You need to upload clear, complete, and accurate documents, including:

  • Passport (valid and unexpired)
  • Language test results (IELTS, CELPIP, TEF, or TCF)
  • Educational Credential Assessment (ECA) (for foreign degrees)
  • Proof of work experience (reference letters, payslips, contracts)
  • Police clearance certificates (from all countries where you’ve lived for 6+ months since age 18)
  • Medical exam results (from an IRCC-approved doctor)
  • Proof of funds (bank statements, investment statements, etc.)
  • Marriage or birth certificates (if applying with family members)

If any documents are missing, IRCC may reject your application, so ensure everything is included.

3. Pay Application Fees

  • Processing Fee + Right of Permanent Residence Fee: CAD 1,365 per adult
  • Child Dependent Fee: CAD 230 per child
  • Biometrics Fee: CAD 85 per person or CAD 170 per family

4. Biometrics & Additional Requests

You’ll receive a biometrics request after submission. Visit a Visa Application Centre (VAC) for fingerprints and a photo. IRCC may request additional documents or an interview if needed.

5. Application Processing & Decision (6–8 Months)

IRCC will review your application, conduct background checks, and verify documents. You can check your application status online.

If approved, you receive a Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) and a Permanent Resident (PR) Visa. If denied, IRCC will explain the reasons, and you may be able to reapply.

6. Prepare for Landing in Canada

Once you receive COPR, you can travel to Canada and complete the landing process at a Port of Entry (POE) or an IRCC office.
